Turkey’s football (soccer) league system, governed by the Turkish Football Federation (Türkiye Futbol Federasyonu, TFF), is one of the most competitive and popular in Europe, with a rich history and a strong domestic following. Structured as a pyramid of tiers, it features professional and semi-professional divisions, with the top tier—Süper Lig—attracting significant attention both nationally and internationally.

1. Süper Lig (Super League)

The Süper Lig is Turkey’s top-tier professional football league, established in its current form in 1984 (predecessor: Millî Lig, founded in 1959). It features 18 clubs competing in a round-robin format (each team plays every other twice, home and away), with the season running from August to May.

  • Championship & Promotion/Relegation: The team with the most points at the end of the season is crowned champion. The bottom three teams are relegated to the 1. Lig, while the top two teams from the 1. Lig and the playoff winner between the 3rd–6th placed teams in the 1. Lig are promoted to the Süper Lig.

  • Key Clubs: Historically dominated by three "Big Four" clubs (though "Big Three" is now more common):

    • Galatasaray S.K.: The most successful club, with 23 Süper Lig titles (as of 2024), 5 Turkish Cups, and a historic 2000 UEFA Cup & 2000 UEFA Super Cup double.
    • Fenerbahçe S.K.: 19 Süper Lig titles, 6 Turkish Cups, and a consistent contender in European competitions.
    • Beşiktaş J.K.: 16 Süper Lig titles, 9 Turkish Cups, and a rival to Fenerbahçe in the "Intercontinental Derby."
    • Trabzonspor: A coastal powerhouse with 7 titles (most recently 2021–22), known for developing top Turkish talent.
  • International Reach: The Süper Lig has a growing reputation, with clubs regularly qualifying for UEFA Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League. Galatasaray remains the only Turkish side to win a major European trophy.
