In 1914, under the leadership of British head coach William Townley, the team defeated RB Leipzig in the final of the German Championship to win the championship. In the 1920s and early 1930s, the team was a powerhouse in German football, reaching the national finals in 1920, the national semi-finals in 1923 and 1931, and winning the national football championship by defeating Hertha Berlin in 1926 and 1929.
